Why Are Mothers Always So Tired?
Have you ever felt like this?
You slept seven or eight hours, yet when the alarm goes off, getting out of bed feels impossible.
The moment you open your eyes, the day's responsibilities begin. By morning, you're already running on empty. By 3 p.m., your mind starts to drift.
After a long day, your child finally falls asleep. At last, you have a little time for yourself—but instead of resting, you find yourself scrolling through your phone while fighting back yawns.
Does this sound familiar?
Motherhood Changes You in Ways You Never Expected
After becoming a mother, many changes happen quietly.
You get out of breath more easily.
You forget things constantly.
Your shoulders and neck always feel tight.
Your complexion looks dull, no matter how much makeup you wear.
You're exhausted, yet your mind refuses to switch off at night.
Your emotions feel unpredictable, and even small things can make you lose your patience.
You might tell yourself,
"I'm just getting older."
But perhaps your body is trying to tell you something else:
"I'm completely depleted."
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), women are believed to rely on Qi (vital energy) and Blood as the foundation of their health.
During pregnancy, your body is constantly nourishing another life. Large amounts of Qi and Blood are directed toward your growing baby.
Childbirth—whether vaginal delivery or a Caesarean section—is another major physical challenge. It involves significant blood loss and a tremendous amount of energy.
And recovery doesn't stop there.
Breastfeeding.
Night wakings.
Rocking your baby to sleep.
Household chores.
Returning to work.
Balancing everyone's needs except your own.
Day after day, your body continues to give.
Night after night, your reserves continue to drain.
Qi and Blood are like your phone battery.
If you keep using it without fully recharging, eventually it won't even have enough power to turn on.
When your body reaches this point, you may notice symptoms such as:
Feeling breathless after minimal activity
Constant fatigue and low motivation
Dizziness or heart palpitations
Cold hands and feet
Excessive hair loss
Light or irregular menstrual periods
Pale, tired-looking skin
These aren't simply signs of "getting older." They can be signs that your body needs restoration.
Nutrition Matters More Than You Think
Now think about your daily routine.
When your child is hungry, you prepare a meal immediately.
When your partner comes home from work, dinner is already waiting.
But what about you?
Breakfast is rushed.
Lunch is whatever leftovers you can find.
Dinner often becomes whatever your child didn't finish.
Some days, you're so busy that you barely remember to drink water.
Over weeks, months, and years, these small habits gradually lead to nutritional deficiencies that affect your energy, recovery, and overall health.
The Cruelest Part: Being Exhausted but Unable to Sleep
Perhaps the hardest part isn't being tired.
It's being exhausted—and still unable to fall asleep.
The house is finally quiet.
Your child is asleep.
Yet your mind keeps replaying today's worries while planning tomorrow's endless to-do list.
According to TCM, the Heart houses the Shen (mind and spirit).
When Qi and Blood become depleted and excessive worrying continues, the Shen has difficulty finding rest.
That's why you may experience:
Tossing and turning at night
Light, restless sleep
Vivid dreams throughout the night
Waking up feeling even more tired than before
Mothers Are Not Superhuman
The truth is, mothers aren't superheroes.
But somehow, everyone expects them to be.
You care for your children.
You support your partner.
You keep the household running.
Yet very few people stop to ask,
"How are you doing?"
You become so used to putting everyone else first that you barely remember yourself.
But here's something worth remembering:
Taking care of yourself isn't selfish.
It's one of the most loving things you can do—for yourself and for the people who depend on you.
Listen to What Your Body Is Telling You
If you've been experiencing:
Constant fatigue
Poor sleep
A dull complexion
Irritability
Low motivation
Feeling like you've completely lost your energy
Please don't blame yourself for "not being strong enough."
Sometimes, the problem isn't a lack of willpower.
Sometimes, your body is simply asking for the rest, nourishment, and care it desperately needs.
Motherhood asks so much of women.
But to continue caring for those you love, your own health deserves attention too.

What's been more exhausting for you—the physical demands, or the emotional weight of motherhood?
